Math
Report from Lina Aoun and her
Grade 5 students from
Valley International
School in Jourat el Ballout, Lebanon.
Hello Everyone,
It has been a long time since we have
communicated with you. I don't want you to think that we have
stopped
working on the project. In fact we at Grade 5 have taken this
project and have expanded on it.It is no more a
"Math" project, but it has become an inter-curricula
project involving "Languages," "Social
Studies" as well as
"Math."
After writing the
"interviews," the students were given the choice of
several subjects to prepare a questionnaire
and survey. Our school in general has chosen "The Child"
as the basis for its projects. To that effect the choices
the children were given were centered about "The Child."
They chose "Orphanages" as their subject,
as this is a
subject that is very important here in Lebanon, particularly as a
result of the war.
As a first step, the students watched
the movie, "Oliver Twist." In their language classes,
they are currently
working on writing a "Movie Review" with their English
teacher Mrs. Claire Chalhoub.
At the same time, in Social Studies,
the students have been trying to search the net looking for
information about
orphanages in general. The students were given the freedom to try
searching the net alone at first. Next, we gave
them addresses to some sites with appropriate informati on. In
order to help them, we gave the students a set of
questions to try to answer.
The next step would be for them to
try to find some sites about orphanages in Lebanon, and then try
to
compare them to orphanages all over the world.
The purpose for the previous research
was to have the children really think about orphanages, what
actually
takes place in an orphanage, who lives there, etc... This will
then help them develop and prepare the
questionnaire. This they will do partly on their own, and partly
with the help of the Social Studies teacher, Miss
Noh Saga, as well as me.
As it will be hard to go personally
to each orphanage or to most of them, I have decided to take the
students to
visit at least one orphanage. We will then email or fax the
questionnaire to other orphanages.
Once the survey is done, the students
will start working on compiling and organizing the data acquired,
and
finally analyzing the data received in table form as well as
charts.
Along side that, the students again,
will be working on writing an overall report, again with their
English teacher,
of what they have done, how they achieved it, and their
conclusion.
The students are all excited on
working on this project. What's even more interesting is that in
certain classes,
for example in Social Studies, more students are involved than
those who are actually with me in Math, the ones
who wrote the Math introductions. Still, all are excited. In
the final report, I will have the Math students
introduce their friends who helped with the survey.
As for Grade 7 students with Miss
Rola Annan, unfortunately, they have not had the time to sit and
work on any
of this project so far. Maybe they will have a chance next year.

Informe actualizado
de la maestra Lina Aoun y sus estudiantes
de 5to grado de la Escuela Valle Internacional en Jourat el

Hola a todos,
Ya va mucho tiempo desde la última
vez que nos comunicamos. No queremos que piensen que hemos dejado
de trabajar en el proyecto. Francamente nosotros del 5to grado
hemos tomado este proyecto y nos hemos
expandido mediante éste. Ya no es un proyecto de Matemáticas,
sino que se ha convertido en un proyecto
intercurricular que incluye Lenguaje, Estudios Sociales y Matemáticas.
Luego de escribir las entrevistas los
estudiantes tuvieron varios temas para escoger, para preparar un
cuestionario y una encuesta. Nustra escuela en
general ha escogido a "El Niño" como base para sus
proyectos. En ese aspecto las alternativas dadas a los niños
estaban centralizadas en "El Niño". Ellos escogieron
"Orfanatorios" como su tema, ya que este tema es uno de
suma importancia aquí en el Líbano, especialmente como resultado
de las guerras.
Como un primer paso los estudiantes
vieron la película "Oliver Twist." En sus clases de
lenguaje están
actualmente trabajando en escribir una reseña sobre la película
con su maestra de Inglés la Sra. Claire
Chalhoub.
Al mismo tiempo en Estudios Sociales
los estudiantes han estado navegando por internet buscando
información
general sobre orfanatorios. Al principio a los niños se les dio
libertad de hacer la búsqueda por sí mismos.
Luego les dimos información sobre páginas de la red con
información apropiada. Como ayuda a la
investigación le dimos a los estudiantes unas preguntas guías
que debían responder en el proceso.
El próximo paso es que los niños
busquen información en el internet sobre orfanatorios en el Líbano
para que
luego los comparen con orfanatorios en el resto del mundo.
El propósito de la investigación
anterior era que los niños pensaran realmente sobre orfanatorios,
qué sucede
en los orfanatorios, quienes viven en orfanatorios, etc. Esto los
ayudará a desarrollar y preparar el cuestionario
Esto lo harán en parte por sí mismos, en parte con la ayuda de
la maestra de Estudios Sociales la Srta. Noh
Saga y con mi ayuda.
Como sería difícil visitar cada
orfanatorio he decidido llevar a los estudiantes a visitar al
menos uno. Luego
enviaremos el cuestionario a otros orfanatorios a través de fax o
de correo electrónico.
Cuando ya esté hecha la encuesta los
estudiantes comenzarán a trabajar en organizar la información
adquirida y
finalmente analizar la data recibida en tablas y gráficas.
Además los estudiantes trabajarán
haciendo un informe completo con su maestra de Inglés sobre qué
hicieron,
cómo lo lograron y su conclusión.
Los estudiantes están muy contentos
de estar trabajando en este proyecto. Lo más interesante es que
en ciertas
clases como por ejemplo Estudios Sociales, los estudiantes están
más involucrados que los que están conmigo
en Matemáticas, los que escribieron las presentaciones de Matemáticas.
En el informe final los estudiantes
presentarán a sus amigos que ayudaron con la encuesta.
Sobre los estudiantes de 7mo grado de
la Srta. Rola Annan, ellos no han podido trabajar en el proyecto.
Esperamos que puedah trabajar para el año que viene.
