Nour's Math Interview

Questionnaire

Interviewee:  Nicole Eid Abu-Haydar

Q: What is your job?

A: I am the associate director of S.D.C. which is a consulting firm here in
Lebanon.

Q: Do you use MATH in your job?

A: Oh yes a lot.

Q: How? Can you give me one example?

A: Well, let’s see.  When a school calls me to see if SDC can help them become a
better school, I talk to them about what they need, how big is the school,
number of students and number of teachers etc..  Then after I meet with them
several times, I put math to work:  I calculate the number of days SDC should
give them, how many consultants should go there, what materials and how
much it costs.  Then I add up all the costs of materials with the salaries of the
consultants and come up with a total number.  I then take this number and
divide it up by the number of months we at SDC will be there. Next, I write
to the school a proposal of what SDC will do, how long, and how much it
will cost them in total as well as how much they must pay each month.

I also use math … Oh only one example! OK

Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your interviewing me!

Math Interview

Interviewee:  Karim Abu-Haydar

My dad works as a principal at V.I.S.  He uses Math in many different ways both for his work and his life at
home.  An example of how he uses Math at work is:  to buy food for the cafeteria.  He calculates how many
students eat at the cafeteria, decides what they could eat, sends someone to see how much that food will cost if
he buys it from this place or that. Then he decides on the place that has better quality food and better prices and
buys it from there.  He tries his best to use the school’s money evenly and wisely.

He also uses it in the report cards.  Here is how he does it:  he adds up all of the grades of
each student in the class and then divides the total by the number of tests, homework etc.
and averages the grade for that student.

An example of how he uses Math at home is:  he has to figure out how much the phone,
rent, car, school, clothes and food bills will cost then he predicts if his salary can pay for
it all.

My dad uses Math in so many ways that I myself, or anyone else, cannot name
them all.  He loves math and he is very happy, because if there wasn’t any
Math at all he would not be able to figure out these things or anything else, so
he would practically go crazy.

So let’s say, it is very good to have Math around!
