CONNECTING MATH TO OUR DAILY LIVES | Traducción a español abajo | Students from Marondera, Zimbabwe Rakodzi High School Teacher--Mavis Satande Students Ages 13-15 PROJECT Introduction Marondera is a small town in Zimbabwe, which has many teenagers. We realised that many of these have social problems, they lack entertainment and find it boring to lie idle. After school, they spend much of the time doing domestic work and lack social activities.  We decided to carry out a survey on the type of entertainment they relish most. We hope to make recommendations to parents and staff members of the school on improving the social lives of the students. Project Description The three four students conducted the survey, at Rakodzi High School ,on the type of entertainment relished most by the pupils aged between 16 and 18 years. They structured a questionnaire. The results of the responses were analysed are represented graphically.  Below are the questions asked and the responses   Q 1  . What type of entertainment do you relish most? A. music    B. reading    C. Disco   D. parties   E. films and movies  E. sports The majority of pupils prefer reading to other forms of entertainment, they said that reading helps them to relax and at the same time learning. Q .2. How much time do you spend on entertainment per week? A. 6 hrs   . B. More than 6 hrs    C. less than 6 hrs Most of the pupils either spend more than 6 hrs or less than 6hrs Q. 3  Is your type of entertainment beneficial ,not time wasting?. A. Yes          B. No 64% of the pupils agreed that their form of entertainment is not time wasting. Q. 4 Does the type of entertainment make you emotionally and physically fit?      A. Yes         B. No Almost 100 % of the  pupils agreed that their form of entertainment keeps them emotionally or physically fit.   Q.5  Are you accompanied to any form of entertainment?      A. Yes      B. No   72 % are accompanied to entertainment and 28 % are not.   Q.6 Who accompanies you? A. Mum or Dad   B. Friend   C. Boyfriend/girlfriend       D. Sister/Brother      Most pupils are accompanied by friends . Q.7 What do your parents say about the type of entertainment you like? A.      they support me B. they say it is time wasting C.   they say they do have the money 59% said that their parents think that the form of entertainment they like is not time wasting. 25% have parents who say it is time wasting and 16% have parents who say they do not have the money. Q.8  What form of entertainment should students have at school? 63% agreed that sporting is the best form of entertainment to have at school, 20% consider drama and only 17% like musical concerts                  CONCLUSION The majority of the students showed that they like reading, drama and sports. This then indicates that there is need to provide these facilities in the community and at school . And also give students more than six hours per week of entertainment in the company of their friends. Some of our parents, teachers and the community believe in keeping the children at home or busy after school, we hope the situation will change. Descripción del proyecto Tres o cuatro alumnos realizaron la encuesta, en la escuela secundaria Rakodzi, sobre el tipo de entretenimiento que mas les agradaba a la mayoría de los alumnos de entre 16 y 18 años. Ellos confeccionaron el cuestionario. Los resultados de las respuestas fueron analizados y representados gráficamente. Debajo están las preguntas hechas y las respuestas. P1. ¿Qué tipo de entretenimiento te agrada más? A. Música. B. Lectura. C. Discoteca. D. Fiestas. E. Peliculas. F. Deportes La mayoría de los alumnos prefieren la lectura a otras formas de entretenimiento, dijeron que leer les ayuda a relajarse y al mismo tiempo a aprender. P2. ¿Cuánto tiempo le dedicas al entretenimiento por semana? A. 6 horas. B. Más de 6 horas. C. Menos de 6 horas. La mayoría de los alumnos tanto dedica más de 6 horas como menos de 6 horas. P3. ¿El tipo de entretenimiento que realizas es beneficioso, no una perdida de tiempo? A. Sí. B. No El 64% de los alumnos estuvieron de acuerdo en que su forma de entretenimiento no es una perdida de tiempo. P4. ¿El tipo de entrenmiento que realizas te mejora emocional y fisicamente? A. Si. B. No Casi el 100% de los alumnos estuvieron de acuerdo en que su forma de entretenimiento los mantiene bien emocional o físicamente. P5. Realizas tu entretenimiento acompañado? El 72% es acompañado y el 28% no. P6. ¿Quién te acompaña? A. Mamá o papá. B Amigo/a. C.Novio/a. D. Hermana/o La mayoría de los alumnos son acompañados por amigos/as. P7. ¿Qué dicen tus padres del entretenimiento que te gusta? A. Me apoyan. B. Dicen que es una perdida de tiempo. C. Dicen que no tienen el dinero. El 59% dice que sus padres piensan que no es una perdida de tiempo. El 25% tiene padres que dicen que es una perdida de tiempo. Y el 16% tiene padres que dicen que no tienen el dinero. Q8. ¿Qué forma de entretenimiento deberían tener los alumnos en la escuela? El 63% estuvo de acuerdo en que el deporte es la mejor forma de entretenimiento en la escuela, el 20% respondió teatro y sólo al 17% le gustan los conciertos musicales.                 Conclusión La mayoría de los alumnos demostraron que les gusta la lectura, el teatro y el deporte. Esto nos indica que es necesario darles estas oportunidades en la comunidad y en la escuela. Y también darles más de 6 horas por semana de entretenimiento en compañia de sus amigos. Algunos de nuestros padres, maestros y la comunidad creen en mantener a los jóvenes en casa u ocupados después de la escuela. Esperamos que la situación cambie.
