Xmas time (good time for waste making!): Fill in the chart (experiment) February 2002: Submission of graphs+statistics to the project web page + Conclusions to the IEARN forum (or to us via e-mail). Age of students: Our students are aged 14-15. We involve 35 students. We would like other groups to participate, having at least another group (partner class) to exchange conclusions on the forum for sure, so our students find answers to their messages and vice versa. Brief description of the idea we want to present and invite another partner to participate in: Title: Recycling. Areas covered: Maths and English. Working language: English. Spanish could be used too Aims: The main aim is working on a short series of activities which focus on STATISTICS AND SOCIETY, in order for students to examine their attitudes towards recycling and environmental protection. The final outcome we want to make possible is that the student analyses a social and environmental issue, contrasting it to other students' conclusions about the same topic. Way of working: To introduce and present the project we suggest the teacher uses a PowerPoint presentation we have created. Mail us and we will send it to you. Another optional way to start presenting the project is by means of a language activities (Reading Activity File+ Post Reading activities). We can send these worksheets too. The language teacher, after the slides, hands out a worksheet. It's a reading activity, where the students know about some DATA about recycling, and complete some writing tasks (+written comprehension tasks). Then, the Project begins with the "Experiment" task (Post Reading Activity 2 CHART). It's a chart the student and his/her family have to fill in during a whole week, recording the amount of rubbish they throw away. Here Maths take a role, when students are requested to analyse and quantify these DATA numerically, by means of graphs and statistics. The language teacher helps the students elaborate their conclusions and they are sent to the iearn.math discussion forum on IEARN www pages.   ANDORRA: Presentación del grupo del profesor Alex Jerez y sus colegas Sra. Les invitan a las otras clases en el proyecto de matemáticas a participar en un proyecto de reciclaje.   Soy Alex Jerez, desde Andorra. Estoy muy contento de poder hacer que colegas de mi escuela se hayan animado a participar en los proyectos de IEARN, en especial el vuestro. Hemos pensado que nos gustarÌa comunicarnos en inglés con la clase hermana, ya que trabajaremos el tema desde matemáticas pero con la ayuda en las actividades inicales y finales de los profesores de inglés (Josep y yo mismo). Quiero ahora explicarte cómo nos gustaría participar: Queremos participar presentando una variable para ser analizada. Šesta coincide con el tipo de proyecto que se define en "Conectando las matematicas a los asuntos sociales y de equidad." "Estadisticas y Sociedad: cuyo producto es un analisis de graficas o informacion numerica sobre asuntos sociales, politicos, cientificos o del ambiente."   Este tema es lo que denomin·is "proyecto local", ya que es el grupo quien idea, crea y presenta el proyecto. Pues bien, nosotros queremos presentar el siguiente proyecto local, e invitar a otros grupos a analizar la misma variable y compartir con nosotros los resultados y asÌ extraer conclusiones: Nombre del proyecto: Recycling (Reciclaje) Descripción: a partir de unos textos iniciales (Reading Activity File+ Post Reading activities) sobre el reciclaje para "warm-up" (que continuan con los temas tratados en la clase de inglés), invitamos al alumno a analizar qué tipo de material, y en quË cantidad, lanza a la basura durante toda una semana. Se trata de que toda una familia anote lo que arroja a la basura durante una semana entera, para que después analicemos y procesemos esos datos, extrapolándolos al resto de la sociedad andorrana, discutir cómo se podría disminuir y acciones de tipo "individual" a llevar a cabo con "cada" familia y comunidad. Es un ejercicio sencillo que puede abrir los ojos al alumno, ya que se implica toda la familia. Esos datos se contabilizaran, procesaran y se haran gr·ficos y estadísticas. Incluyo en este e-mail las fichas o worksheets que hemos creado para entregar a cada alumno. Invitamos al resto de grupos a uitlizarlas, especialmente la Second Activity (Post Reading Activity 2 CHART). Es esta actividad la que permitir· a cada familia llevar a cabo "su particular análisis". Cuando tengamos los datos procesados, entre enero y febrero de 2002, enviaremos las conclusiones al fórum iearn.math para que los otros grupos los comenten, esperando nosotros hacer lo mismo con los de los otros participantes.
