Connectando la matemáticas a la vida Presentaciones 2001-2002   OHIO, EEUU.: Presentación de grupo de las maestras Sra. Patti Burwinkel y la Srta. Bail y sus estudiantes (9-10 años) de sus dos clases de matemáticas. Son de la Escuela de la Natividad en Cincinnati en Ohio. Hola! Somos los niños de cuarto grado de la Escuela de la Natividad en Cincinnati en Ohio en los EEUU. Cincinnati esta localizada en el suroeste del estado de Ohio. Ohio es uno de los 50 estados de los EEUU. Ohio esta al sur del Lago Erie, uno de los lagos Great Lakes. Estamos a 39 grados y 8 minutos latitud norte y 84 grados y 30 minutos longitud oeste. Somos 21 niñas y 25 niños en el cuarto grado este ano: un total de 46 estudiantes. Estamos en dos clases. La Sra.Burwinkel y la Srta. Bail son nuestras maestras. Tenemos 9 y 10 años de edad. Nuestra escuela tiene 79 años y va de jardin infante hasta octavo grado. Es una escuela privada catolica y nuestra iglesia esta al lado de la escuela. El nombre La Natividad viene del nacimiento de Jesucristo. Estudiamos 7 materias (matematica, estudios sociales, lectura, escritura, religion, ciencia y la buena salud) cada dia y hay 7 clases especiales (arte, musica, edcuacion fisica, la biblioteca, computadora, idiomas extranjeras o banda) que asistimos una o dos veces por semana. El dia escolar empieza a las 8 de la manana y termina a las 3 de la tarde. El lema de nuestra escuela es "La Escuela Natividad....Un lugar donde queremos estar". Hacemos muchas cosas divertidas. Tenemos un gobierno estudiantil, Dias de Compañeros, un programa de variedad, un programa de intercambio extranjero, proyectos de servicio a la comunidad y excursiones escolares, y mucho mas. Cincinnati esta ubicada en el Rio de Ohio. Es un rio muy usado con mucho trafico de barcazas. Las barcazas llevan coal a Cincinnati para los meses de invierno. Tenemos 4 estadios en la orilla del rio: uno nuevo de futbol americano y uno viejo para de beisbol. Tenemos 4 estaciones. Es caluroso y humedo en el verano, fresco y lluvioso en el otoño, frio con nieve en el invierno y caliente y lluvioso en la primavera. En este momento las hojas de los arboles estan cambiando de color y cayendose. Anticipamos trabajar con otras escuelas de este programa. Queremos enviar nuestras autobiografias matematicas a otra clase que quiera leerlas y responder y nuestros parafos y montajes entitulados "Que sentido tiene la matematica para mi". Queremos entrevistar nuestros padres para saber como ellos usan la matematica en el trabajo y compartirles esa informacion tambien. Queremos colectar esta informacion y presentarla en forma grafica. Tambien queremos investigar como se trataban a los inmigrantes a nuestro pais en tiempos pasados y presentes. Esperamos tener resultados para compartir en la primavera. Este invierno nuestra clase participara en un programa de matematica que integra la musica, matematica y literatura en un formato de solucionar problemas llamado "Viaje al otro lado". Quizas podemos contarles lo que hacemos en esto tambien. Tambien queremos usar numeros de longitud y latitud para localizar todas las escuelas participantes en nuestro mapa del mundo. Subject: Greetings from Cincinnati, Ohio USA Hello! We are the 4th graders from Nativity School in Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. Cincinnati is located in the southwestern corner of the state of Ohio. Ohio is one of the 50 states in the United States. Ohio is just south of Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes. We are at 39 degrees 8 minutes North latitude, and 84 degrees 30 minutes West longitude. There are 21 girls and 25 boys in Grade 4 this year, for a total of 46 students. We are split into 2 classes. Mrs. Patti Burwinkel and Miss Marcia Bail are our teachers. We range in age from 9 to 10 years old. Our school is over 80 years old and has grades Kindergarten to Grade 8. We are a private Catholic school and our church is right next door to our school. Our name, Nativity, is taken from the birth of Jesus Christ. We get 7 classes (Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, Religion, Reading, Science and Health) every day and 7 special classes (Art, Music, Physical Education, Library, Computer, Band or Foreign Language) once or twice a week. We go to school from 8 am to 3 pm. Our school motto is "Nativity- A Great Place to Be". We think it is! We do lots of neat things. We have a student government, Buddy Days, Variety Show, Foreign Exchange Program, community service projects, field trips and so much more we can hardly count. Cincinnati is on the Ohio River. It is a working river and you can see barges there all the time. The barges haul coal to Cincinnati for the long months ahead. We have 2 stadiums on the riverfront. A new one for our football team and an old one for our baseball team. We also have 2 college basketball teams that many students cheer for. We have 4 seasons. It is hot and humid in the summer, cool and wet in the fall, cold and snowy in the winter, and warm and wet in the spring. Right now it is fall and the leaves are changing colors and falling off the trees. Our class is really looking forward to working with the other schools that are a part of this program. We want to send Math Autobiographies to any class that will read and respond and also send paragraphs and collages of "What Mathematics Means to Me". We're going to interview our parents about how they use Math at work and can share that information with anyone, too. We also want to use latitude and longitude numbers of all the schools to pinpoint your location on the world map in our classroom. Please send us your latitude and longitude and we'll write back. In the future we plan to collect information by tallies and learn how to graph that information. We are also going to investigate the treatment of immigrants to our country, both past and present. We hope to have some results for you in the spring. This winter our class will be participating in a Math program that integrates music, math, and literature into a problem solving format called "Journey to the Other Side".
