Connecting Math to Our Lives Math Introductions 2002-2003   NARVA, ESTONIA: Class introduction from math teacher Irina Vikentjeva and students (ages 12-13) from the Pahklimae Gumnaazium. Damlik tervitus! These words in our native language mean "hello from the deep of our heart!" So, we are very glad to participate in the project and wish luck and happiness to everyone involved!! We live in a beautiful country, Estonia. Estonian language belongs to the Finno-Ugric language family and is closely related to Finnish. Along with Finnish, English, Russian and German are also widely spoken and understood. We would like to introduce our native land with the help of some figures.   Area: 45 227 square km. Estonia is a green land, forests cover around half of the country (20 155 square km) Borders: Total length - 1445.4 km, with a sea border of 768.6 km and a land border of 676.8 km. The capital of Estonia is Tallinn (population 400 thousand or 29% of total population). Distances from Tallinn to: - Helsinki 85 km; - Riga 307 km; - St. Petersburg 395 km; - Stockholm 405 km. Number of islands: 1 521. Largest islands are Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Muhu. Estonia is a country of thousand lakes, largest of these are Lake Peipsi and Lake Vaumlrv Highest point: Suur Munam (Great Egg Hill), 318 m Temperature range (average daily): -1.4 C in January 2001 and +20.5 C in July Total population: 1.4 million   Currency The Estonian Kroon (EEK), 1 Kroon = 100 sents 1 EUR = 15.65 EEK       We live in Narva ; a small town, situated on border with Western Russia, not far from Saint-Petersburg. In our mathematical circle 12 pupils from 2 sixth classes (all in classes 56 men) are engaged. 1989-1990 years of birth, 4 persons were born in spring, 2 in summer, 6 in autumn Our months are: March (1), April (2), May (1), July (1), August (1), September (1), October (1), November (1) Our birthdays - 5 (1 person), 6 (1), 11 (1), 14 (1), 15 (1), 16 (2), 17 (1), 18 (1), 24 (2), 28 (2) Are engaged in circles: Dancing - 4 Gymnastics - 2 Modelling - 1 Volleyball - 1 Swimming - 5 We` re all cheerful and amicable people, and participating in the project we hope to get a good opportunity to meet new people and to get something new about maths.
