Connecting Math to Our Lives Math Introductions 2002-2003   Laval, Québec, Canada: Class introduction from math teacher Catherine Ducharme and students (ages 10-13) at Crestview School We are at 73 1/2west 35 longtitude 45 1/2 north 31 latitude Hi Everyone, We are from Crestview School in Laval, Québec, Canada. Today we all woke up to 25 cm. of snow. 25 cm of snow fell in 24 hours! Some of us made forts as long and as wide as small mountains. At recess time we played football in our school yard that was full of snow.We are seven females and twenty males , four of us are already adults who work as teachers and teacher assistants. Everyone else are between the age of 10 and 13 years old. We have some very special projects this year First we are all studying and learning about Native people from around the world. We have learned about the history and culture of North American Natives and their legends and stories. We are also all involved in a Social Justice program where by we are working on freeing the children in Child Labour globally. We are exploring and working on world peace. 99% of us like all kinds of sports like hockey nascar, basketball, soccer, football, baseball, skiing, snow boarding, roller bladeing and wrestling. Half of our class like Bionicol a toy that is very popular. You have to build it and they are machines that have special powers. We'll take a picture and e-mail it to you. They're Cool and we'll tell you more about them as we get into the project. One of our students loves drumming and one day he wants to be a professional drummer. He really has the beat and rhythm going on. We love music from all over the world. Estamos localizados en: 73 1/2 oeste 35 de longitud y 45 1/2 norte 31 de latitud Hola a todos, Nosotros somos estudiantes de la Escuela de Crestview en Laval, Québec, Canadá. Hoy nosotros nos despertamos con 25 cm de nieve. ¡En 24 horas cayeron 25 cm de nieve! Algunos de nosotros hicimos fuertes tan largos y tan anchos como montañitas. Durante el recreo jugamos fútbol en el patio de nuestra escuela, que estaba repleta de nieve. Somos siete hembras y veinte varones. Cuatro de nosotros somos adultos y trabajamos como ayudantes de maestros o somos maestros. Todos los demás están entre las edades de 10 a 13 años. Tenemos algunos proyectos muy especiales este año. Primero que nada, todos nosotros estamos estudiando y aprendiendo acerca de la gente indígena de alrededor del mundo. Hemos aprendido acerca de la historia y la cultura de los indígenas norteamericanos, y también acerca de sus leyendas y cuentos. Nosotros también estamos en un programa de justicia social donde estamos tratando de liberar a niños que son utilizados para trabajar a nivel global. También estamos explorando y trabajando en cómo promover la paz mundial. El noventinueve por ciento (99%) de nosotros aprecia todas clases deportivas como el hockey, el baloncesto, el fútbol, el fútbol Americano, el béisbol, esquiar, patinar en la nieve sobre tablas, patinar sobre ruedas, y lucha libre. A la mitad de nuestra clase le gusta Bionicol, un juguete que es muy popular. Estos juguetes se tienen que ensamblar y son como máquinas que tienen poderes especiales. Vamos a tomar una foto de uno y se la vamos mandar por correo electrónico. Estos juguetes están grandiosos y nosotros les diremos más acerca de ellos cuando hagamos el proyecto. A uno de nuestros estudiantes le gusta tocar el tambor y un día él quiere ser un profesor de tambores o un baterista. El realmente sabe mucho sobre el ritmo y la melodía. A nosotros nos fascina la música de todas partes del mundo. Tenemos a estudiantes en nuestra clase que no sólo hablan en francés e inglés, sino que también algunos hablan otras lenguas como portugués, español, griego, armenio, italiano, árabe, hebreo, urdu, ucraniano y "Mohawk."
