Connecting Math to Our Lives

Math Introductions
2003-2004

Antofagasta, Chile : Class introduction from math teacher Mr. Claudio Galindo and coordinator Mr. Félix Alvarez and their students (age 14-17) from the Club "Grandesideas" [Great Ideas].

Hi, we are a group of students from Antofagasta in the north of Chile, aging from 14 to 17 year old. We have formed a club called "grandesideas" (greatideas) and have been joining from 2002. We focus our work on science and technology development in the Atacama Desert. This year we are organizing and inviting ten high schools from Antofagasta to participate in a contest on this matters using the English language and computing, making oral presentations.

We also have a web page http://www.grandesideas.cl

Every year for the last 2002 and 2003 we have also visited San Pedro de Atacama, a town in the middle of the desert with plenty of natural and archeologic attractions. We have showed these tours through our web page hoping to share our region with other students in the world. Our team is formed by three coordinator students (Carola, Ely and Rubén) then there is a second bigger group of students who work every Saturday from March to December, improving their skills on computing, English and learning more about our region. This year our main team will participate in the inter schools contest with the theme "Fog Collectors" (an inventive technology to get drinking water from harvesting fog in the coastal areas of the driest desert of the world, the Atacama desert).
