Cincinnati, Ohio's Symbol for the Virtual Gallery of Math, Art, and Life.
The Tyler Davidson Fountain

We have chosen the Tyler Davidson Fountain located in Fountain Square Plaza in Cincinnati, Ohio, as our symbol for the Virtual Gallery of Math, Art, and Life. The fountain is so beloved here that it is sometimes said that it pumps the city's blood rather than its water. The fountain was designed and built in Munich, Germany. (Cincinnati's culture and population is rich with German influence.) The bronze used for it was from melted down Danish cannons. Its weight is 24 tons of bronze and 85 tons of granite stone. Its walls are covered by over 2,000 feet of pipe. It is estimated that 500 gallons of water flow from the fountain each minute.

The fountain is 43 feet tall. Water streams from the hands of the 9 ft. tall female figure called the “Genius of Water”. 438 holes are pierced in each hand. Below her are 4 adult figures depicting life uses of water. Below them are 4 relief panels showing 4 industrial uses of water. 4 child figures are on the corners depicting 4 pleasures of water, and finally there are 4 drinking fountains. When the water is turned off, twinkling lights take the place of the water.

The Tyler Davidson Fountain is generally regarded as the symbol of Cincinnati and is used as gathering place for many Cincinnatians and a meeting place during sad times and times of celebration. We are proud to offer it as our symbol.
