Analysis of Statistics Presented in the Media:
Women-owned Businesses

Student from Puerto Rico

G. Rodríguez
Age 11

One of the activities in the math project is for students to analyze a graph or chart showing statistical or numeric data. In this activity the students create or find a graph or chart depicting some kind of numeric data or statistics on a theme of interest. Ths might include themes related to social, political, scientific or environmental issues. In this case a sixth grade student chose to look up statistics on women in the workplace. After creating or finding the graph or chart, students explain the information that it conveys and write about the implications they think the data projects.

The graphic below shows an example of a worksheet created by a Puerto Rican teacher in the math project to guide her students in this activity. Finding a graph of interest in the newspaper was just the first step for the student whose work appears below. The student also wrote a one page essay analyzing these statistics on "Women-owned Businesses in the U.S." and the implications of this data.
